Who doesn't remember sitting miserably through the final weeks of the school year, endlessly daydreaming out classroom windows of long warm summer days and cool breeze evenings playing joyously unsupervised with good good friends. No doubt today's children continue to long for the same pleasures. But do today's children get to enjoy such memory making times during their summer vacations? Some do, but many many do not. Instead, their time is highly structured with extra classes, private lessons, and other supervised activities. Either that or they spend their time inside alone watching TV and playing video games. Then again, some do spend their summers unsupervised, but out on the streets flirting with illegal gang activities, daring each other ever deeper into darkness. All in all, it is not the same as it used to be. And that is sad, very sad. |
