To have walked through squalor, hunger, draught, sickness, and despair. To have faced hatred, menace, vicious bloodshed, and death. To have suffered the clawing wrench of profound loss. To now be standing on a busy street corner where all that is elsewhere, where all that seems besides the point. What now? What can be made of this life still flowing through me? It is the child I bring forth that will cleanse me, renew me. It is the child, innocent of what I have seen that will smile, laugh, and go forth to learn what can be made of this light and promise through which I now walk. I am resolved. I will do that. Healing will start with me, right here, right now. I am resolved. |
