The first cry of a newborn initializes a struggle that will characterize the arc of its entire life. The pitiful creature has fallen out of comforting, comfortable equilibrium into a world that is at once too hot, too cold, without sustaining nutriment, and without meaningful spiritual connection. It cries in anguish for what has been lost and in doing so a life defining function of its brain begins to work: imagination. Imagination relates past sensation to present and stirs musculature to action in attempts to resolve the dissonance. Past, present, and possible futures mingle within an unbalanced narrow field of vision that compels and propels physical action toward a new, more comfortable, more spiritually satisfying equilibrium. Unfortunately, that new equilibrium, no matter how perfectly or imperfectly achieved, will not last. And so, the cycle begins anew. Cycle by cycle, struggle upon struggle, damaging scar upon damaging scar, the little creature's story proceeds unto its final chapter of ultimate crushing defeat. Hopefully, the information we gain, the insights we acquire, reading the scars of others and listening to their stories will nourish ever wiser imaginings for our own next chapters. |
