Today is Memorial Day in the U.S. It is the day we try to remember and show appreciation for those who have fought in our stead to defend what we say we believe in. But have they? Have they really? Or, is it more that we have failed them, failed to think clearly about what is at stake, what the true costs will be for our own incompetence, complacent ignorance, over wrought fears, selfish greed, lack of imagination, and desire for petty one-upmanship, failed so miserably that instead of heading off and solving problems of want and jealousy, hate and self-sacrificing revenge that stare us in the face, we have tasked our proudest well meaning young men and women to wipe that which we fear off the face of the earth in fiery smears of blood, that far too often have included the very lives of our own sons, daughters, wives, husbands, fathers, and mothers.

And so, on this day, in memorial, we hang our heads in shame and guilt for failings we still, to this day, do not fully understand, but for which we do recognize that, tragically in consequence, innocent others, that we may not even know, have paid the price.

May, in days ahead, at least some of us begin to recognize that war will never be the answer or gateway to peace and prosperity for anybody, not even the select few who may win. For as waves of violence roll out from the shore, they will only return and return and return again until the shore itself has been eroded to destruction. No so called winner will ever be left to stand. That the only rational answer beyond fear, envy, greed, and ignorance is the pooling of effort, knowledge, and resources toward the respectful accommodating mutual benefit of all humans that reside upon this planet, with no one left behind or locked out to seethe unto yet another war.
