To enter into a temple of worship is always a curious and reverent experience. It is the site where adherents stand psychologically naked before that which they acknowledge to be greater than themselves. Some offer supplication, others adoration. A few seek useful wisdom and understanding as to the ways and means of the acknowledged higher power. It is a curious phenomenon that so few adherents of any religion have noticed that supplication and adoration are far less likely to yield truly useful results than the perhaps not so simple act of asking a salient question and diligently seeking a comprehensive answer. If there is a creator to this universe we inhabit, he or she has certainly been generous in giving us the capacity to understand it and has never begrudged our meager successes in probing its vast mysteries. On the other hand, those who do act without comprehensive understanding have never failed to cause harm or find themselves squashed. And no amount of supplication or adoration has ever changed that very predictable outcome. |
