Relations between humans can be dark. Lovers quarrel. Bosses irritate. Sales fall through. Services fail to satisfy. The news is filled with murder and war and needless tragedy, extortions, frauds, abandonments, and exploitation. And then, the constant harassment of advertising, poking at us, haranguing us, trying to manipulate us with humor, lust, greed, envy, or fear into buying what we have no need of nor can actually afford. Who can blame us for turning away, for seeking something greater, more rational, more predictable, more imperturbable, more tolerant and understanding of our limitations, more ready to teach us and meet us half way in our stumbling efforts to satisfy our needs? Who can blame us for imagining benevolent spirits existing beyond our senses, who have the vision to see what is coming and wisdom of knowing what to do? Who can blame us for trying to establish a friendship with such beings, through prayer or dance or song or ritual practice? Who can blame us asking for their assistance in parting the darkness that exists between and amongst us, in easing the pain we cause each other through selfishness, fear, ignorance, and greed? Who can blame us for believing there must be a way to know and exist in harmony with nature and all its forces? Who can blame us for believing we might get closer to such bliss out beyond the presence of our fellows, in places where the sky is closer and the air is clearer, cleaner, and free of stink, where subtle colors and streaming light dazzle us, while wind whips cleansing rain into our faces and ageless rocks hold us steady? Who? Who can blame us? |
