As light fades and temperatures dip
oh lady fair
how can my thoughts
not turn to thee

Scent of clove, pine, and eggy nog
buttery skin and silken hair
eyes bright
cheeks aflush
lips sweet with ginger
and molasses

I long to see your anxious form
flames reflected in our eyes
scurry to make a place for me
my chilled and weathered
soiled and shaggy
worn and weary hulk

Offering something warm to sip
you gently take three fat birds I bring
then from a kettle heating
wipe my face to give a kiss
such a thrill
a tear will not hold back
your soft and knowing hand
I cannot release

To hug your warm
and wondrous body to me
God's life affirming crucible
is what I'll always long for
out on this harsh and unforgiving
dark and biting
endless wintery trail
