We live such sheltered lives. Gwendolyn believed that. She bought a ticket to somewhere. She is gone now, inside a different bubble. This bubble she has left behind still glows with abundance on the verge of harvest, harvest she will not now partake in. Layer upon layer of human activity has produced this abundance. In years past, Gwendolyn was eagerly a part of that long and honored chain of interconnection. And then she read something or saw a picture. It hinted at something outside, something totally outside the life we knew. She couldn't stop thinking about the realization that her life didn't include everything, maybe hardly included anything. "What good is a life that doesn't include everything?" she said. Is she right? Is she right that in sealing ourselves off where life is safe and prosperous and comfortably knowable, we lose the entirety of what God has given us? Is she right in that? |
